Children's Technology Review: Best Educational Technology
Featured by Apple in Kids and Education categories
Yep, it is the 21st century and with that a different view of what our present and future educational needs and wants are.. “Hopscotch – programming for kids!” is a perfect app for setting our children, as well as - really anyone, on this path.
In viewing this app, I found that the basics of programming are not just an overwhelming mishmash of confusing code. This app puts creating a program into a step-by-step, understandable task. The graphical programming language is designed to be used with an Apple devices, using their programming language. This is all done with a simple coding as well as drag and drop. The app provides two dimensional cartoon type characters to choose from. These are very kid-friendly and add a lot to the fun factor.
Using video instructions, one is taken through the steps of designing each project within the app. This is obvious the best approach, as one will not get hung up in any significances, get confused and head over to the couch to play a game type app. With a video, you can stop the instructions at any time and do any programming up to that point, go back to the video and continue in this wise. This gives any budding programmer the “real” factor, which is one of the best things about this app.
From the developer: “Why learn to code? Computer Science is among the highest paid college degrees and programming jobs are growing at 2x the national average. By the year 2020, there will be a projected 1.4 million computer jobs but only 400,000 CS students. Even if kids don’t grow up to be programmers, the problem solving and critical thinking skills they will obtain playing Hopscotch are necessary for every career path. Hopscotch was inspired by MIT’s Scratch.
