abc PocketPhonics uses a very simple and powerful approach to learning reading and writing. It begins by introducing a letter, it's sound, writing it and then using it in simple words, like “it”. More letters are introduced in the same wise, with the “CVC” pattern used. All-in-all the app is comprised of all letters in the alphabet, over 30 - 2 letter blends, such as “sh” in 160 high frequency words. Each word has a picture to go with it. Nice acknowledgments are given for a job well done. Progressive learning allows for new words, as other words are mastered.
Parents and teachers can view on-line reporting for their student(s), as well as basic information on the device. Weekly emails on progress can be sent. There is even a reading guide that can be via the “Parentzone”.
As the child progresses, certificates can be sent to them. This is a nice way to acknowledge the child, as well as encourage them to move forward.
This is not a super fancy “bells and whistles” type app, but a very effective teaching method, with proven results. In an independent research study, it was found that by using abc PocketPhonics, children learned nine times faster after using the app, compared to a regular lesson in school.
