ASL Dictionary from NTID is a video based dictionary that includes 2,700 words as well as 650 sentences using the word, or idiom. The video sentences can be captioned with the words, demonstrating their meaning. This includes facial expressions and and hand movements for different usages for the word being viewed. The app, in this wise, shows the grammar that would befit a particular usage.
This app is a modified version, based on the ASL Video Dictionary and Inflection Guide by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.
Their are 24 different categories of words to go into. Each of these including words within each category. While viewing many of the words included, the app shows similar words that you can tap on to view comparisons, giving one a more comprehensive understanding.
The app includes a section labeled “Grammar”, which is packed full of information and video examples. It covers how different areas of grammar affect a word being used, as well as sentence structure, how a word would be communicated for different kinds of question and a lot more.
There is also an option to download videos that you would like to have easily on hand, no matter where you may be.
This app is the most complete ASL dictionary I have come across and I have to say that I am completely impressed by it. I am completely surprised at the cost to download it.
Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
