Cursive Writing Wizard has taken a potentially boring, difficult task and made it a fun educational game. This app goes the extra mile. My hat is off to them.
To begin with, the user picks a letter to practice. The app then shows you the letter being written (on the standard lines for learning to write) and the name as well as the sound the letter makes. Now get this, you can record your own voice for each letter. So, let's say, if you want to have "a" be spoken with both short and long vowel sounds, go right ahead and customize away! You are then invited to follow the sequence of writing that particular letter. We are not just talking a nice simple line. We are talking multi-colored, dazzling lines that explode into dozens of moving parts, that you can stick back onto the line, play with, roll around your device, or... what ever suits your fancy. What kid wouldn't just love to learn how to write their letters in this fashion???
There are two mode for learning. The “free” has the student follow the directions and goes from what ever letter was chosen to work with and moves one forward in the alphabet from there.
In the “5 star” mode, the student practices a particular letter until they master it, giving them 5 stars. It starts out with an easy follow the directions, all the way to just giving you the points you would go to in writing. You can practice this letter as much as desired. Once you have received 5 stars for your work, they show up on the selection page, which has all the alphabet, surrounding each letter mastered.
The above is true for learning both upper and lower case letters, as well as numbers designs and words.
Once letters are mastered, your child can go onto words. Tap on the Word Lists button and it takes you to a page where you can either: work on 3 letter words, practice often confused letters, or create your word lists of your own to practice. Once again, any of these can be played in the free or 5 star modes.
When creating your own word lists, you can add a recording to each word you add.
This app is magically amazing and worth every cent! I can't think of anything I would want to add to a cursive handwriting app.
