Hiragana are characters (symbols) in the Japanese language that represent syllabic sounds. Mnemonics are memory tricks that use humor or a memorable connection to something else, in order to help you remember something.
When I first downloaded the application, I did not realize it was a flashcard based application for learning. It almost didn't make its way onto this website. I spent about 3 minutes in the lessons section of the app, and then went to the quiz section. After just three minutes, I got 7/10 right on the quiz. I was amazed! How did basic flashcard learning get to be so effective!!
Mnemonics was the key! The hiragana characters are presented as lines incorporated inside an actual object, or animal, which itself would produce or represent the syllabic sound that character represents.
This application was promoting that it could... help you learn automatically without trying. They were right. In three minutes I learned enough to get a C grade on a quiz. I'm still stunned.
So when you, or your child, apply yourself to this app, and use it to actually learn Japanese, I'm confident you'll get very far, very fast.
Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
