The title of this app really says it all! Think of it as a Pandora, or Spotify, or Apple Music, but for books catered to kids 12 and under.
Epic! starts by walking you through a series of questions about your child: age, preference in stories and what kinds of books you are looking for.
It then provides a ranking of high-quality books that fit you and your child's personal profile. These are not “no-name” children's books either. We are talking about books from National Geographic, HarperCollins, Macmillan and other big name publishers of children's stories – like The Chronicles of Narnia series, Clifford, Batman, and Berenstain Bears. Over 10,000 books are instantly available through this app.
There is a monthly subscription fee for the service, with the first month being free. The app is ideal for parents who can't make it to the library routinely, or find themselves spending money on books only for their children to eventually get bored with them and needing new reading material.
There is no subscription fee for teachers, and librarians in the US and Canada.
In addition to reading books, the app supports audio and read-to-me formats. It uses an algorithm as well, to make personalized suggestions for your child. Books can be stored on your device for offline reading on airplanes, car rides, or anywhere that Wi-Fi or cell phone service is spotty.
The app has a detailed reading log so you can keep track of what's been read already, and see your child's progress in reading level.
If you're a parent like me and you've just read Charlie the Ranch Dog for the 1 millionth time, you might consider signing up for the free trial, giving yourself instant access to a ton of new reading material. This low cost service may just be for you!
