Pay attention, because I'm about to give this application a completely rave review.
I remember being in school and my teacher holding up phonics flash cards and making us drone the sound, one after the other. It was certainly effective, but it took forever and was incredibly boring. This application takes a Montessori approach to the alphabet, which includes phonetic sounds as an incidental necessity.
Let me explain. The letters are first introduced to the child in lower case, as the sound they make. So instead of teaching kids the names of letters (which, as we all know, have very little to do with the sound those letters make) the kids are learning letters phonetically. They are also taught how to draw the letter. The app then progresses to two-letter combinations and the sounds made by those combinations, and again how to draw the letters.
Once the child has mastered the working sounds of each letter, they are then transitioned on a smooth gradual level to recognize the actual name of each letter and are additionally shown how to draw upper case letters. A final option on this app allows the child to record his or her voice in pronouncing the letter sounds.
I seriously thought I had seen everything with regards teaching the alphabet. There are a lot of great methods out there, but this is the only one that actually makes any sense to me. It turns learning into a practical experience and not just a memory game. Your kids will be better for it.
