This app is a very nice, low-cost, basic astronomy app for investigating the night sky. It has a lot of basic functions that are incorporated into the very expensive astronomy applications. It doesn't have Wikipedia links or detailed information about stars, planets, etc., but that is not the purpose of the app.
If you are simply looking for something that will identify celestial objects and constellations, then this app is perfect. It gives you the ability to toggle through many layers of the night sky. Starting with just stars, you can toggle on a grid, or celestial lines. You can toggle on constellation connections with lines, then turn on the names of the various constellations. My favorite layer is the one which super-imposes an actual picture of the mythological object or creature on the stars of the constellation. Kids will love that as well.
Like all similar apps, this one updates in real-time and can be set to show you how the sky looked at any previous time or date, or how it will look in the future. It will also pinpoint your exact location and identify what you are looking at above with the iPhone's gyroscope.
Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
