Ask any professional musician how they first started off learning to play guitar and they'll tell you they started by learning their favorite songs. Before they learned music notation or sight reading, they learned a few chords and and some finger positions and just started putting it all together.
Ultimate Guitar makes this easy and brings this fabled method of learning to the 21st century. I've owned this app for years and it is still my go-to app for learning to play any song I've ever wanted to master.
This app is put together by a community of guitarists who teach themselves songs and then post the chords and notes for others to learn and play. Every song you've ever wanted to play is in this guitar tab archive, I guarantee it.
Now the app has been fully updated with many goodies and I could not be more excited.
The app now comes with a guitar tuner so you never have to exit if you need to adjust tuning to play a certain song. “Tab Pro” allows you to hear the song and see the timing of the notes as you play along. A metronome is also available inside the app itself.
For an upgrade fee (life-time or subscription based, ranging from $1.99 to $39.99) the app offers seven great guitar lessons for beginning students. The subscription options offer some great perks, if you're a constant user and want to really dive in and learn a ton.
The app also features a chord library. This library can be accessed from any song you are learning. You simple tap on the chord you want to learn and you are provided with several different options and positions for playing it. This is not only a great way to gain familiarity with your instrument, but also allows you to give each song a personal flair. Nothing is more impressive in conversation than being able to say, “Well, the way I play it...”
