Word Wizard - Kids learn to spell with talking alphabets, spelling tests & fun phonics games

Age Level: Ages 5-8, Ages 8-12
By Developer: L'Escapadou

I was blown away by this application when I was looking at it today. It is a spelling application combined with phonics. It has quizzes and teaches the student to spell numerous words phonetically.

The lessons and quizzes cover a wide range of words, from extremely basic to more and more difficult phonics concepts, such as double consonants and other letter combination sounds. It gives a 1,400 word vocabulary in all.

The most amazing aspect of this application is the movable alphabet. It has an alphabet on the bottom of the screen and when each letter is touched the phonetic sound of that letter is pronounced by the narrator. The letter can be dragged to any number of boxes. As the child drags letters next to each other the narrator first pronounces the phonetic sound of the new letter and then pronounces the entire combination of letters. In this way, the student learns to combine letters to make words and sees the progressive sounds and pronunciations that go into spelling.

This application has received accolades from the New York Times, the Apple, Children's Technology Review and more. It is a fantastic design and extremely simple to use.

Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
