(Three apps for a complete program)
Age Group: 0-5
We here at AppTreasureHunter.com want to help you get your children ready for preschool and the challenging road ahead.
Starting your kids off on the right foot education-wise is a big mystery to most new parents. In this day and age of multimedia, television and other distractions, it can be hard to know exactly where to start. Unfortunately, many parents rely on television programs and YouTube to teach their children basic mathematics and the ABCs. This method of teaching tends to fixate children and doesn't really invite their own self-determined participation in the learning process.
It's best to start young children off with the traditional "Three R's" of learning: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. We have searched long and hard to find you the best applications so you can start teaching your toddler just those things and on a learning curve that will ensure success.
These three applications stress the Montessori method of teaching:
With the Montessori method, young learners hear the phonetic sound of letters and learn how to use those sounds and turn them into words. A child can then use this sight/sound combination and learn how to spell and read with ease. This also goes for the math program. Children see numbers as quantities and can then take that skill and use it to perform arithmetic.
With these three apps you can provide your youngster with a well rounded preschool education, stressing the traditional value and importance of the "Three R's". Below are the app reviews for these three apps.

This application is a special take on the Montessori method of alphabet teaching and won the Parents' Choice Gold Award in 2012.
This learning application is for children below reading age who are learning the alphabet. The application walks the child through the alphabet and gives the phonetic sound of each letter (as opposed to their proper names) and prompts the child to first trace, then draw the letter just learned.
An "I spy" game gives the child the use of each alphabet letter by presenting an object. They are then prompted to say the name of the object into a recording device.
Two games combine into a mix and matched learning experience, once the student has become proficient at each.
A tool box exists for the child to see a phonetic alphabet, keep notes, draw in the sand and see images related to letters and vocabulary.
The company that made this application was founded by Montessori teachers. This application provides the student with the benefits of the Montessori teaching method, which compares to a private Montessori lesson for your child.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later
For those of you unfamiliar with the Montessori Method, just know that it's a highly successful and somewhat revolutionary way of teaching younger kids and is all the rage in major metropolitan cities. It seeks to enhance learning by catering to "human tendencies" and thus make it easier and more interesting for learning to take place.
To enjoy this application, you don't need to know anything about Montessori education outside of this: this application is the single best spelling application I have seen to date.
Montessori Crosswords has won an Editor's Choice Award for Excellence in Design from Children's Technology Review. It as well has been featured in the New York Times.
This application teaches spelling using pictures, words and (most importantly) phonics; the sounds of each individual letter used in combination to form a word.
The child then presses letters of the alphabet and hears what sound that letter makes, and uses this sound to determine if it is the correct letter used in the word, or not.
As your child gets better and better, more difficult words using "vowel combinations" and "consonant blends" are given, allowing your child to learn and spell these more complicated sounds using combinations of letters.
This app has rightfully earned praise from all over the educational community. I can't imagine a better way to promote literacy than through the use of phonics. This app NAILS it!
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
This app won an Editor's Choice Award for Excellence in Design by the Children's Technology Review - 4.8 out of 5 stars.
I couldn't agree more. This app is jam packed with Montessori lessons surrounding numbers and addition.
Montessori Numbers is very easy to use and a lot of fun for any child. True to Montessori, the application uses blocks in its numbers and addition games, which is a highly effective method of teaching.
With this app a child can learn to count, experiment with quantities and learn their names, learn numerals, how to write numerals and many many more.
It is really several apps in one. Just by itself, it is able to take the place of 3 or 4 other Montessori apps. This app is fully loaded and just may be the only Montessori driven numbers app you'll ever need to download.
Price: $2.99 Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later
